Windshield calibration involves fine-tuning the camera lens parameters to ensure it captures a complete and accurate view of both the vehicle and the road. This process is essential for providing the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) with reliable data.
The ADAS camera is typically mounted at the center of the windshield and monitors the road ahead, feeding crucial information to the system. This enables the ADAS to trigger automated safety functions when necessary. If the camera is misaligned, it can impair the system’s performance and create potentially hazardous driving conditions. That’s why proper camera calibration is a vital step anytime a windshield is replaced.
Some common ADAS features include:
If you have an ADAS camera fitted to the center of your windshield, there is a chance your camera will need to be recalibrated from time to time. Instances that require recalibration include:
You might be asking yourself—why does a car need to be recalibrated after a windshield replacement? The answer lies in the hidden technology built into modern windshields. What looks like a simple piece of glass is a highly engineered component of your vehicle’s safety system.
Windshields today often include embedded sensors, strategically tinted or clear zones, built-in heating elements, and even layers designed to reduce noise. Some of these features are directly connected to your vehicle’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Even the slightest shift in sensor position—by just a millimeter—can throw the entire system off balance. That’s why recalibration is so important after a windshield has been replaced.
In many vehicles, cameras used for lane keeping, collision alerts, and other driver-assist functions are calibrated to “see” through precise sections of the windshield. If the glass is misaligned, or if the camera view is even slightly distorted, those features might not function properly. These systems are sensitive and require exact alignment to work as intended—which is why recalibration isn’t optional, it’s essential.

Each repair is different. The repair generally clears the chip up about 75 – 90%. This all depends on the age, contamination, and severity of damage. Although the chip doesn’t clear up 100%, the repair is preventative as opposed to cosmetic.

If the damaged area is smaller than a quarter we can usually repair it. Just keep in mind a repair is a preventative fix, not a cosmetic one so the chip may still be visible. In some circumstances, the attempt to repair a windshield can result in the chip or crack becoming larger, we are not responsible for this damage.
